GEEK PICK: Fitbit Versa

Stay on target

It’s always encouraging to us whenever Apple doesn’t utterly dominate whichever new product category it decides to enter. Just because people love iPhones and certain Mac software doesn’t mean that an Apple Car deserves to entirely upend the very concept of personal transportation. So while there are definitely plenty of folks who regularly wear and use Apple Watch, it’s not nearly the cultural force that other Apple products are, and that’s a good thing.

The brand that did become a cultural force in wearables is Fitbit. People love wearing those little bracelets and quantifying their biometric data for better workouts and healthier lifestyles. So if you’re looking for a device that combines some of the appealing aspects of Apple Watch but with a wearables brand you actually like, our sister site PCMag recommends the Fitbit Versa ($200).

There may not be a $10,000 gold version, but Fitbit Versa does look a lot like Apple Watch. The body is a rounded square waterproof up to 50 meters. You can choose between black, gold, and silver combinations of silicon straps and aluminum cases. The screen bezel is a little too thick but the 300 x 300 display looks nice, especially considering the novelty of even having a screen on a Fitbit device.

As you’d expect from Fitbit, the Versa can track all sorts of data from you as you exercise or just live your life. Various sensors and monitors record steps, heart rate, and even how much oxygen is in your blood, and syncs them with your calendar over the internet. There’s also a plethora of female health tracking.

What makes the Fitbit Versa an Apple Watch competitor though is its broader selection of apps. Of course there’s a heavy emphasis on fitness and coaching apps. But there are also music streaming apps, NFC mobile payment apps, and apps like Starbucks and Yelp. Versa is platform agnostic, so both iOS and Android owners can use it as a hybrid smartwatch/fitness tracker.

For much more on the Fitbit Versa be sure to read the extensive review over on our sister site PCMag.com.
